Simple, Natural Remedies
Natural Cough Syrup![]() Here's another wonderful natural cough syrup for that frustrating cough. Please remember not to give honey to a child under 1 year old! (see caution below)
I take a glass of boiled honey, and into this I put a few drops of eucalyptus oil, stirring it in well. When the cough comes on, I take a teaspoonful of this mixture, and relief comes almost immediately. 2SM 301 Caution: Even though honey is a natural product, it is not safe to give to a child younger than a year old. "Honey can contain spores of a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, which can germinate in a baby's immature digestive system and cause infant botulism, a rare but potentially fatal illness. These spores are usually harmless to adults & children over 1 year old, because the microorganisms normally found in the intestine keep the bacteria from growing." Natural Remedies for Tummy Aches

For pain in the irritated stomach, place a heat source directly over the stomach, such as a heating pad, a hot water bottle, or a towel wrung from hot water. If you alternate the heat application with a 30-second ice-cold compress, its effectiveness is enhanced and prolonged.
Or one may take charcoal tablets or capsules, two to eight tablets to adsorb the toxic products of previous overload and indigestion. An old fashioned remedy used for children with upset stomachs is that of catnip tea. It works like a charm for a painful stomach. Dr. Agatha Thrash, MD
Cabbage-The Amazing Ulcer Healer
![]() Cabbage and several green leafy vegetables contain a factor known as “anti-gizzard erosion factor,” later called vitamin U. It was observed that large amounts of fresh cabbage and lettuce protected stressed guinea pigs from ulcers. The factor was found in the juice of cabbage, thus eliminating the need to eat huge quantities of cabbage. Sixty-two ulcer patients were given at least a liter of cabbage juice daily. The average healing time for seven patients with duodenal ulcer was 10.4 days, compared to 37 days for patients with standard therapy. Six patients with gastric ulcer healed in only 7.3 days, while six patients receiving conventional therapy required 42 days. The cabbage must be freshly squeezed and not boiled, as boiling destroys the factor. A mixture of 75 percent cabbage juice and 25 percent tomato or celery juice was used with patients who objected to the flavor of the cabbage juice. Raw celery has been found to be high in the healing factor.

The Use of Aloe Vera as a Remedy
![]() Nearly any affliction of the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the anus can be properly treated by Aloe Vera gel or juice. Aloe Vera liquid has a slightly stimulatory effect on the colon, although the substance causing diarrhea has apparently been removed in some preparations. If one takes a large quantity of Aloe Vera liquid or gel there is a possibility of getting mild diarrhea. For this reason Aloe Vera is helpful for constipation. Simply take an ounce or two once or twice daily along with a meal. If one has peptic ulcers or gastritis, Aloe Vera liquid is one of the best treatments for it. It has a soothing and healing effect and can relieve pain, burning, and discomfort. For gas or acid formation, the use of Aloe Vera liquid can bring prompt relief. Dr. Agatha Thrash, MD

Great Sore Throat Remedy!

Known as the "Heating Compress", this sore throat remedy is so easy to do that anyone can use it.
Cut a strip of cotton cloth the size needed to go around your neck once with some overlap, and about 2-3 inches in width. The cotton should be a thin, cotton fabric from an old flannel or bed sheet scrap. Then cut a wool fabric piece larger than the cotton strip (or just use a sock). You will also need a piece of plastic long enough to wrap around your neck (saran wrap is perfect).
Wet the strip of cotton in cold water and wring out completely. Smooth out the fabric before putting it in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Remove from the freezer and wrap it around your neck. Do not wrap it too tightly. Now wrap the plastic wrap over the cotton strip. Lastly, over the top of the plastic wrap place the wool fabric or sock or even a scarf and pin in place with a safety pin. No cotton fabric should peek out from any of the subsequent layers. It will feel cold only for a few minutes, and then will begin warming up. You should wear this overnight. You may also use the treatment throughout the day.

Natural Remedies For Sunburns

Here are a few sunburn treatments that are effective in reversing the effects of a sunburn and also provide pain relief.
A cool water bath will help to rehydrate the skin and decrease inflamation of the skin. 2 or 3 Tablespoons of baking soda can added to a cool tub of water or baking soda may be substituted with super-saturated epsom salts water (also very beneficial for any kind of burn). We drying off, do not rub skin but pat dry.
Cool compresses of baking soda water, vinegar are also relieving if a tub is not available. Dip a tee shirt in cool baking soda or vinegar solution, lightly wring out and wear or use a cotton type fabric or paper towels to apply compresses. Rewet as needed. Icecubes may be used to cool water solutions for added comfort.
Remember to drink plenty of water! But most importantly, take all precautions when in the sun and avoid sunburn!

Here's a lifesaver tip from the natural remedies first aid kit!
Administer 1 spoonful of cayenne pepper in juice or hot water to a person having a heart attack, or apply a natural "nitro pack" in the form of a cayenne pepper poultice, applied to the backs of the knees or in the groin area. This equalizes the blood from head to feet even as quickly as 10 seconds.

How To Apply The Poultice
Using whatever available container you have, use approximately one half cup of cayenne pepper, or less. Moisten, but do not over moisten (you don't want it to be soup). Apply well dampened cayenne to cotton type fabric or paper towel if available, or even a medium to large leaf would work if that's all you had. Lay directly against skin and hold or tie in place.

102 degrees F.)
Warning-Contraindications: (treatment not for use in!...)
Very Elderly or feeble
Certain heart conditions
Ischemia

neck or back
Useful for rheumatoid arthritis
Prepares the patient for a cold treatment
Precautions:
1. Patient should be vigorous and basically healthy, not debilitated
or feeble.
2. Keep a constant watch over the patient, checking vital signs freq
uently. Take pulse and temperature readings every 15 minutes
until the temperature is again below 103 degrees.
Supplies needed for this treatment: Straight chair, hot plate, tea kettle, foot pan, pitcher, bowl of ice, bed sheet, plastic sheet (ex. shower curtain) or blanket,
2 bath towels, 1 hand towel, washcloth, ice bag, watch or clock with second hand, glass of hot water for drinking, may add 1 tsp. eucalyptus oil or 2 T. dried mint leaves per pot of water if medicated steam is needed, and a thermometer, and thermometer, such as candy thermometer to check water temp.
How to do this treatment: The hot plate and tea kettle of boiling water should be placed under the chair. Place a towel on the seat of the chair [drape it over the front of chair to prevent any steam burn to the backs of patients legs]. Place foot tub in front of chair for hot foot bath.
Seat patient & begin hot foot bath. When patient begins to sweat or the oral temp excedes 100, apply cold compresses to the head [ice bag]. Keep the foot bath hot by adding hot water. [This may require removing a little of the water in the foot bath container via a pitcher, so that the container does not overflow.]
Drape the sheet or blanket or both in tent fashion around the back and shoulders to cover the body from the neck down, including the hot foot bath, so that the steam from the boiling pot is captured. Use care if a tea kettle is used that the spout is not directed toward the patient.
Fold a hand towel lengthwise and fashion as a snug-fitting collar to told the sheet in place and prevent steam from escaping.
Encourage the patient to drink 1-2 glasses of hot water to encourage sweating.
Check mouth temperature and pulse at temple or neck. Keep the pulse under 140 and the oral temperature under 104 degrees. [Caution: if pulse excedes 140, apply icebag over heart. If pulse does not drop, immediately end treatment & cool patient with cold mitten friction or cold water.] Keep the air temperature under the tent between 120-130 degrees until the body temp goes up to 102-104 degrees, when it can be reduced to 105-110 degrees.
After removing the steam apparatus and drying the feet, the sweating and fever can be prolonged by blankets, the patient going from chair to bed still wrapped in the tent sheet. Cover warmly with blankets to prolong the sweating. The treatment may be terminated with a shower or cold mitten friction as desired.
Give an 1/2-1 hour of reaction time in bed. If sweating has been profuse, have the patient take a cleansing shower at the end of the reaction time to cleanse the skin and readjust skin temperature. Administer copious amounts of water by mouth during and after the treatment.
Duration of Steam treatment: 30 minutes-1 hour
Rest time following treatment: 30 minutes-1 hour
