Our Health & God's Law
Knowledge must be gained in regard to how to eat and drink and dress so as to preserve health. Sickness is the result of violating nature's law. Our first duty, one which we owe to God, to ourselves, and to our fellowmen, is to obey the laws of God. These include the laws of health. If we are sick, we impose a weary tax upon our friends, and unfit ourselves for doing our duty either in the family or to our neighbors. And when premature death is the result, we bring sorrow and suffering to others; we deprive our neighbors of the help we might have rendered them; we rob our families of the comfort and help which they should have received from us, and rob God of the service he claims of us to advance his glory. Then are we not, in a high sense, transgressors of God's law? CTBH 12

Gaining Weight
On Salad?

Jeff Novich, RD, MS, shared this metaphor about how Americans view "healthy" fats in their diets-
"I order a really big salad, and I then reach for the olive oil and I pour some olive oil on my salad and I mixed it up real well and I eat the whole salad and thats all I have for lunch. Would that seem unusual to any of you? No. In today's world everybody's doing it. But what if instead of reaching for the olive oil, I have my big salad and I took out my handy, dandy cooler-cause when your on a diet you carry a cooler with you. And I reached in the cooler and took out a pint of Ben & Gerry's Ice Cream...then I take out a 1/2 cup scoop, cause when you're on a diet you measure. And I put 4 or 5 scoops of Ben & Gerry's on my salad and I mix it all up and I eat the whole thing. Would that seem unusual in any way? What would you think of me ? That I'm nuts!
Guess which has more calories-2 tablespoons of olive oil or a 1/2 cup of premium ice cream? Olive oil. Two tablespoons of olive oil have more calories than every ice cream; have more calories than most premium ice cream. Now I understand the type of fat is different but when it comes to weight-what matters most? The type of fat or calories? Calories. So which would be be worse for you? The olive oil. Now let me ask you a question-which do you think would taste better? The ice cream. Which do you think would be more satiating? The ice cream.
So for 20 years Americans have been ordering salads-putting olive oil all over it. They're getting heavier...it's not satiating and it doesn't taste good."

A Story from The Recipe Exchange Lecture About Eating Your Drinks and Drinking Your Food

Out first lecture during the Recipe Exchange was concerning proper chewing of your food. This story was shared about a man who was a prisoner in a camp during World War II who discovered the blessings of chewing his food well. He lived to tell of his experience, along with 2 fellow prisoners who followed his chewing advice.

For dips such as tofu sour cream or soy "yogurt" based dips, skip the salt and add a pinch of tarragon or dill instead. For homemade mashed potatoes, use chopped chives or minced fresh garlic instead of salt to add flavor. Vegetables: Don't add salt to cooking water when preparing vegetables. Instead, toss cooked peas or corn with a half teaspoon of dried dill. Green beans are tasty with Garlic, basil, dill in cooking water. When preparing broccoli, try garlic or marjoram and for cauliflower basil, dill, ginger, oregano, coriander or mint to enhance flavor. You may also serve with chopped fresh parsley or a half teaspoon of dried parsley. Tomato Dishes: Equal amounts of dried basil and oregano will season tomato-based dishes without salt. Rice: Don't add salt to cooking water when preparing rice. Instead, toss cooked rice with a dash of tarragon for a unique flavor. The Green Monkey Study![]() "From Dr. Lawrence Rudel of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center: Rudel ran a five year study feeding olive oil and saturated fat to African Green monkeys. The monkeys metabolize fat in the same way as humans, so they're good stand-ins.. At the end of five years, their autopsies showed that the monkeys who were fed olive oil had higher HDLs (the good cholesterol) and lower LDLs (the bad cholesterol) than the ones fed the saturated fat diet. The big surprise here: Both groups had exactly the same amount of coronary artery disease. The higher HDLs & lower LDLs of the olive oil group were meaningless. Rudel later repeated the study on rodents, and got the same results." There are a number of ways to estimate approximately how much you should be drinking per day but there are no set rules and there are many factors that affect your bodies water needs such as extreme summer heat. Use the 6-8 glasses per day rule or this simple math formula: Your weight in pounds, divided by 2 = ounces of water you should drink per day. For example a 120 pound adult would require 60 ounces or a little more than 7 glasses. Or check this easy to use hydration calculator.
